MRS. ALEXANDER'S SCHOOL PRESCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN |

Greetings from the Reading Readiness Room where pre-school children participate in engaging group lessons designed to teach pre-reading skills! Activities include: rhyming, classification of objects, sequencing, letter recognition, beginning letter sounds, and viewing a page from top to bottom and from left to right.
The Kindergarten reading program is Beginning to Read, Write and Listen published by Macmillan/McGraw-Hill. The children listen to instructive tape recordings. As they complete lesson papers within each of the twenty-four letter books of the program, they learn to write the alphabet letters, and they practice recognizing and saying each letter sound. It is exciting when the children practice blending letter sounds together to form words!!

Enter a world where children experience the elements of music and movement along with lots of laughs, smiles and fun! Children need these two art forms in order to express their feelings, communicate and understand other cultures. The children learn about the basic elements of music as pitch, tempo and texture. This is accomplished through singing, chanting, rhythm instruments, conducting and rhythm games. The basic elements of move-ment help the children to discover the way their body parts move, an d how their bodies move through space. It's fun to move backward, slowly, heavily, lightly or smoothly! By the end of the school year you can see the practical applications of the elements in the children's galloping, skipping, leaping, ball bouncing and dribbling, stair climbing and other skills!

Enter into an exciting and creative environment for children! The students participate in multi-sensory art activities such as brush painting, finger painting, gluing, cutting and play dough. These types of activities help to refine young children's small muscle skills, and they stimulate individual creativity as well. Each month the children use their artistic talents as they make seasonal decorations for their Mrs. Alexander's School calendars. Holiday themed projects are always fun, and inspire some beautiful art work that can be seen, for example, on Valentine party bags and Chinese New Year lanterns!

Come into a classroom where preschool children practice skills that will help to prepare them for Kindergarten! Activities include work with colors, shapes, numbers, letters, positional terms, sorting and classifying, and rhyming words. They learn about the holidays, the seasons, and the calendar. Each child completes a very special book, "All About Me", that contains family information and drawings.

Enter the world of Language Arts where activities are designed to help preschool children develop their listening and communication skills. Our "Author of the Month" program introduces children to beloved children's literature by well-known authors - Eric Carle, Dr. Seuss and Jan Brett to name a few! Poetry that is learned and recited with hand motions is an integral part of the Language Arts program. The poems and accompanying children's artwork are compiled into a booklet, "My First Book of Poems", to be taken home and treasured by each child!

Welcome to the Science Room where your children will be inspired to explore their environment and determine how things work. They will learn how to predict outcomes for experiments, and how to carry out test to see if their predictions are correct. Whether they are creating an ocean habitat, assembling a rain forest terrarium, making rocket balloons soar to the sky, or watching popcorn kernels and raisins dance in baking soda and vinegar, students are sure to enjoy the whole process. Perhaps some will become scientists in the future! In the Science room, the children are also offered use of the Sensory Table throughout the year. Some mediums include water, snow, marbles, beans and rice! Always a bit hit! |
Welcome to the Social Awareness Room where the children learn about the world around them: their country, state, community and school! Activities and discussions often center on proper manners, school rules, and being a good friend! The children enjoy the "Weekly Reader", a newspaper for young children.
Come into our kitchen to experience the joy of cooking! As the children stir, mix, and taste they are learning to develop organizational skills, follow directions, and practice early reading and basic math skills. It's time to get cooking at Mrs. Alexander's School!
